Nicobar Bronzeback Tree Snake Material Examined : 2 specimens, including 1 adult and 1 sub-adult. Description & Scalation : Snout broader and squarer; eye large with round pupil; head elongate, distinctly broader than neck. Internasals shorter than prefrontals; 1 loreal longer than high, elongate; 1 preocular, reaching upper surface of the head, not touching the frontal; 2 postoculars; temporals 2+2; vertebral scales enlarged, broader than the dorsals of the first scale row, scales smooth, in 15:15:11 oblique rows; supralabials 9 ( 4th just touching 5th and 6th below the eye, 6th largest ); 10 infralabials first 5 touching the first pair of genials. Ventrals 172-178, with sharp, lateral keel; subcaudals 142-148, paired , ( 107 in one specimen ); tail long, wire like; anal divided. Coloration : Bronzy-olive above, scales spotted with blue, interscale skin black. Underside pale green. Lips and lower jaw pale green. Head bronzy-olive; a broad black temporal stripe that starts from nasal, up to forepart of the body. Natural History : Diurnal. Arboreal, active in low bushes and trees. Fast and active in its movements. Four adults were observed at the day time, in lower bushes on Great Nicobar Island. Shy and timid in behavior, but bites several times when handled, mild swelling takes place around the site of the bite. Not much known about its feeding habits, like other Bronzebacks must be feeding on frogs, geckos, lizards and small birds. Breeding biology unknown, juveniles are seen in the month of June. Grows upto 1.25m. Distribution - India : Endemic to Central and Southern Nicobar group of Islands, recorded from following Islands – Great Nicobar, Little Nicobar, Pilo Milo, Camorta, Nancowry, Katchall, Trinkat, Bompoka, Tarasa, Chowra and Tillanchong.
